Processing the Scene

This course is to help officers and/or agents of probation, parole and correctional staff identify, document, and properly collect items of evidence.  Officers and agents are tasked with conducting searches within residential facilities and during home visits to ensure that terms of the conditions of probation or parole are met.  If the conditions of probation or parole are violated, it is incumbent for probation, correctional staff or other law enforcement to properly document and collect evidence for submission to the court systems for further action.

Course includes training on:

  • Defining what is evidence and its use in the investigation and court;
  • Identifying possible dangers at a crime scene and how to take the appropriate protections;
  • Identifying available resources at the county, state, and federal levels;
  • The value and need of the chain-of-custody;
  • Documenting the scene and evidence by sketch, log and photography; and
  • The reasons why and how to collect, process, and transport evidence.
